Spanish Information

European Spanish is spoken throughout Spain and Andorra. Latin American Spanish is spoken throughout Central and South America, Mexico and the Caribbean and in the United States. Spanish is an official language of the European Union, the Organization of American States, the Organization of Ibero-American States, the United Nations, and the Union of South American Nations.

Spanish Language Facts

Spaniards call their language “español” (Spanish) when contrasting it with languages, such as French and English, but call it "castellano" (Castilian), the language of the old kingdom Castile, when mentioning other languages spoken in Spain such as Galician (galego), Basque (euskera), and Catalan (català).

Text written in Spanish first appeared as notes and glosses in Latin religious texts, the Glosas Emilianenses, dating from the 11th century. During the 12th century, law codes (Fueros) were being translated into Spanish. Then Spanish prose flowered during the reign of King Alfonso X the Wise of Castile, who besides being the king, also found time to write a Spanish encyclopedia called Las Partidas, which contains laws, chronicles, recipes, and rules for hunting, chess and card games. The first Spanish grammar, by Antonio de Nebrija, and the first dictionaries were published during the 15th and 16th centuries.

There are many different dialects and pronunciations between the various Spanish-speaking countries. The biggest difference is between Spanish spoken in Spain and that spoken in other countries. To reach as many people as possible in the US, Mexico and South America, a neutral Spanish is recommended. If your target audience is a specific country, we recommend using a translator native to that country. It is also possible to use a neutral Spanish translation, and then adapt the translation to your target country.

Writing Spanish

Spanish uses the following 29 letters, but some countries do not consider "rr", "ll" or "ch" as a letter, but rather a combination of two letters. All letters can easily be viewed on your computer:

a, b, c, ch, d, e, f, g, h, i, j, k, l, ll, m, n, ñ, o, p, q, r, s, t, u, v, w, x, y, z.
