Chuuk State, previously known as the Truk Islands until 1990, is the most populous of the four islands of Micronesia. Most inhabitants live on Chuuk Lagoon, a large, mountainous archipelago with a coral reef.
Along the coast are mangrove swamps with rain forest covering much of the mountainous areas. Because of the tropical climate, crops such as yams, taro, and bananas grow well here, with islanders also raising pigs and chickens. Fishing is also an important part of subsistence. The surrounding waters play an important role to Chuuk Island, where there are two traditional navigation schools that teach students to use ocean-going canoes.Chuuk State is also home to some of the most impressive diving in the area, with many World War 2 wreckages to explore.
Chuukese is part of the Austronesian language family and is one of eight indigenous languages of of the Federated States of Micronesia. There are approximately 45,000 speakers across the islands and there are two dialects, East Lagoon and Fayichuck.
Chuukese is written using a Latin script that was developed by Christian missionaries in the 19th century. In the 1970's, linguists added additional accented letters to the alphabet.
