Greek is spoken mainly in Greece and Cyprus, where it is an official language. Greek is also recognized as a minority language in parts of Turkey, Italy and Albania.
Greek is an Indo-European language native to the southern Balkan peninsula, the language of the Greeks. It forms an independent branch within Indo-European. It has the longest documented history of any Indo-European language, spanning 34 centuries of written records. In its ancient form, it is the language of classical Ancient Greek literature and the New Testament of the Christian Bible. In its modern form, it is the official language of Greece and Cyprus, including minority and emigrant communities in numerous parts of the world. It is written in the Greek alphabet.
The Greek language enjoys a high level of respect worldwide, as it is the language of one of the most influential civilizations in human history and one of the greatest literatures of all time, the Greek literature, which has a continuous history of three thousand years. It has lent many scientific and technical words to English and other European languages, and has been estimated that 12% of the English vocabulary is of Greek origin.
Greek has been written in the Greek alphabet since approximately the 9th century BC. In classical Greek, as in classical Latin, only upper-case letters existed. The lower-case Greek letters were developed much later by medieval scribes to permit a faster, more convenient cursive writing style with the use of ink and quill. The variant of the alphabet in use today is essentially the late Ionic variant, introduced for writing classical Attic in 403 BC.
The modern Greek alphabet consists of 24 letters, each with a capital (majuscule) and lowercase (minuscule) form. The letter sigma has an additional lowercase form (ς) used in final position.
Type of writing system: alphabet - the first one to include vowels.
Direction of Greek writing: Originally written horizontal lines either from right to left or alternating from right to left and left to right. Around 500 BC the direction of writing changed to horizontal lines running from left to right.
