Italian is a Romance language spoken primarily in Italy. In Switzerland, Italian is one of four official languages. It is also the official language of San Marino, as well as the primary language of the Vatican City.
Of all the Romance languages, Italian is considered to be the closest to Latin in terms of vocabulary.
As in most countries, there is one neutral language understood by all, which is used for all the media and government communication. However, several dialects are also spoken in Italy. These non-standard dialects are limited to native speakers in informal contexts. In the past, speaking in dialect was often deprecated as a sign of poor education. The younger generations speak almost exclusively dialects of standard Italian, usually with local accents and idioms.
Italian is written using the Latin alphabet. The letters J, K, W, X, and Y are not considered part of the standard Italian alphabet, but appear in loanwords (such as jeans, whiskey, taxi.)
