Javanese is part of the Malayo-Polynesian language family and is spoken by approximately 75 million people mostly on the island of Java, Malaysia, and Singapore. The largest concentration of speakers resides in Central and East Java.
Javanese is broken into both regional and socio-linguistic types:
Ngoko-Basic Javanese that is spoken between people of the same social status, or when addressing someone of a lower status.
Madya-Middle Javanese that is spoken between strangers and acquaintances.
Krama-High Javanese that is used to speak to someone of higher social status and is used in formal situations.
It has three main dialects:
Western-Spoken on the northern coast of Java.
Central-Considered the prestigious dialect and also the basis for standard Javanese.
Eastern-Spoken in the majority of the Eastern province.
Javanese has a literary tradition that goes back over 1,000 years! The written tradition was influenced by Islamic and Indian literature, though little is written today because of the push to establish literature in Indonesian, which is now the national language.
Javanese uses a Latin alphabet that was first introduced by the Dutch in the 19th century. Prior to this, a Javanese Script was used, a syllable-based writing system where each consonant has a corresponding vowel. Much of the Javanese vocabulary has been borrowed from Arabic, Dutch, Malay, and Sanskrit.
