In Aruba, the language is called Papiamento and in Curaao and Bonaire it is called Papiamentu.
Papiamento/u is one of the official languages of the Netherlands Antilles along with Dutch, which is the main written language used on these islands. It is a Creole language that contains elements of Spanish, Portuguese, Dutch, English and French, as well as Arawak and some African languages.
In 1993 Papiamento/u was introduced as a language of primary school education in Curaao, making this one of very few places where a Creole language is used as a means of acquiring basic literacy.
Papiamento has two main dialects: Papiamento in Aruba and Papiamentu in Curacao and Bonaire. Although the Papiamentu in Curaao and Bonaire are very similar, there are still minor differences.
Spoken (Aruban) Papiamento sounds much more Spanish. The most apparent difference between the two dialects is given away in the name difference. Whereas Curaao and Bonaire opted for a phonologically based spelling, Aruba uses an etymologically based spelling. Many words in Aruba end with "o" while that same word ends with "u" in Curaao and Bonaire. Similarly, there is also a difference between the usage of "k" in Curaao and Bonaire and "c" in Aruba.
