The Republic of Zimbabwe, formerly known as the Republic of Rhodesia, has three official languages: English, Shona and Ndebele.
Shona is a Bantu language spoken in Zimbabwe and southern Zambia and parts of Botswana. The total number of Shona speakers is estimated to be over 20,000,000. Shona is taught in schools but is not the general medium of instruction for all subjects.
The word Shona identifies the language, the people and a culture. The Shona motto is, "No one lives for himself but for the family." Shona people help and support each other with their fieldwork. The local spirit of the area officially declares which day to rest during planting season where no one is allowed to work in the fields.
Shona uses two dialects; in addition to their everyday language, they use a "high" Shona language for praying to their ancestors. The "high" or formal language is rich in proverbs and has a complete vocabulary of its own. Shona uses latin font for writing.
